Accommodation
Being a small island, off a big island, off a bigger island, means Maria is inherently isolated, and the perfect place to leave your day-to-day world behind – a true retreat.
Rooms are available in the old penitentiary building at Darlington – a few minutes walk from the jetty. Rooms tend to book well in advance, so call ahead to be sure. There are nine rooms with bunk beds that sleep six people in each. Rooms have a picnic-style table and chairs, and a wood heater. A larger tenth room sleeps 14 people. No, it’s not five star, but the rates are very reasonable.
There is a large camping area behind the sand dunes at Darlington – not far from the jetty. Camping fees apply, but there’s no need to book.
There are also free campsites available at French’s Farm and Encampment Cove – some three to four hours walk, or one to two hours ride away.
There are no showers on Maria Island – just the sea. There are shower and laundry facilities in Triabunna close the Maria Island Gateway building on the corner of Vicary and Charles Streets.
Limited untreated water is available at Darlington, French’s Farm and Encampment Cove.
