How long does the ferry take to get to Maria Island?

The travel time between Triabunna and Darlington is about 45 minutes. Please arrive 30 minutes to check-in at the Triabunna Visitor Information Centre.

Is there phone service on Maria Island?

That depends on who your carrier is - don’t rely on it...

Can I change my return ferry time?

Yes. Subject to availability. Once you've booked online, you'll be able to manage your booking via the online booking portal. If you need to add an infant to your booking you'll need to phone 03 6224 8333. (Remember, phone reception on Maria is not the best.)

Are there shops on the island?

No. Please make sure you bring all that you need with you. Food and drink, coffee, Tasmanian beer and wine (takeaway available), and other tasty treats are available to purchase from on board the ferry. Don't forget your sunscreen and appropriate clothing - conditions can change quickly. All rubbish must also be taken with you when you leave the island.

Where can I stay on Maria Island?

The Penitentiary in Darlington provides basic bunkhouse style accommodation. Bookings can be made six months in advance. Bookings for camping aren’t required but fees apply and enquiries can also be made through the Maria Island Gateway - adjacent to the Triabunna wharf.

Do I need a Parks pass? Where can I buy one from?

As Maria Island is a national park, a parks pass is required to enter the island. Certain pass types can be purchased from this website.

Do you cancel your ferry if the weather is bad?

Our vessels are designed to be able to operate in most weather conditions. However, as the safety of our passengers and crew is our primary concern, there may be times where the skipper may delay or cancel a service. In such instances we will provide as much notice to our passengers as we can in order to minimise any potential disruptions.

Can I book extra luggage on the day of travel?

Yes. You can pay to take additional luggage on your day of travel. You will be charged the regular rate. If your sailing is at full capacity, we may be able to transport your luggage to the island on another ferry.

Do you have bikes for hire?

Yes. Bikes can be booked during the online booking process. More information can be found on this website.

Can I take my own e-bike (electronic bicycle)?

Yes. You will be charged the regular e-bike freight of $20. Please note: There are no charging facilities on island. Batteries must be removed before boarding the ferry. E-bikes must be fitted with a bell, rear reflector, front facing white light and rear facing red light. Max 200 watt or pedal assist 250 watt output. Manufacturer plates with wattage output and cut-off speed specifications must be clearly visible.

Are e-scooters allowed?

No. E-scooters are currently not permitted on Maria Island.

How long does it take to get to Triabunna?

By car: From Hobart - about 1.5hrs. From Launceston - about 2.5hrs. From Port Arthur - about 1.75hrs.

Can I take my car to Maria Island?

No. The few vehicles permitted to drive on Maria Island belong to the Parks and Wildlife Service.

Where can I park my car in Triabunna?

There is free parking available at the marina in Triabunna, and in the surrounding streets.

Can I get a refund?

The full refund policy is explained in our terms and conditions when you make a booking online. No refunds are offered for change of mind, inadvertently booking the wrong time, or personal reasons. We do offer transfers to other scheduled services if made at least 24 hours prior to travel. This transfer is valid for use within one year of the original date of travel.

What if I lose my tickets?

If tickets are lost, our office needs to be notified immediately on 03 6224 8333. If a lost or stolen ticket is not reported before that ticket is validated by someone else, a second entry will not be granted on that ticket, and no compensation will be provided.
