What to Bring

There a no shops or cafés on Maria Island, so please bring everything you’ll need. Yes, there is a ‘coffee palace’ on the map, but it’s a museum, not an espresso bar!

We sell food and drink (and coffee) on board the ferry so if you’re visiting for the day, lunch provisions can be purchased enroute.

There is a supermarket, laundry and a couple of cafés in Triabunna. Make sure you stock up if you’re planning to stay overnight.

We’ve prepared a list of the basics to get you started:

  • Food (enough for your entire stay)
  • Water (a refillable bottle is best)
  • Water purification tablets or the means to boil water as water on the island is not guaranteed to be potable.
  • Warm clothing
  • Raincoat
  • Sun protection (sunscreen and broad brimmed hat)
  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • First aid kit
  • Medications
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Day pack
  • Rubbish bags (there are no rubbish bins on the island, you must take all your rubbish with you when you leave)

If you’re staying overnight don’t forget your sleeping bag, tent, toiletries, torch, fuel stove, cooking equipment etc. There are gas top stoves in the Mess Hall near the Penitentiary accommodation but bring your own gear just in case.
