Luggage & Freight
There are no shops on Maria Island, so you’ll need to bring everything you’ll need with you on the ferry. There are no rubbish bins on Maria Island either, so all rubbish must be taken off the island with you when you leave.
Some luggage is included in your ticket price, and the luggage allowance for those staying overnight is different to those who are only visiting for the day. Please read the following information carefully.
Same Day Return Ticket Holders
Those visiting Maria for the day are allowed one carry-on item each, which means one small bag up to approximately 7kg, and no larger than 600 x 400 x 300mm. Carry-on luggage must be able to be kept safely on your lap (prams excluded!) and not interfere with other passengers.
Overnight Return Ticket Holders
If you’re staying overnight, your ticket price includes one small carry-on bag up to 7kg (no larger than 600 x 400 x 300mm) and two pieces of larger luggage up to 17kg (up to 800 x 500 x 400mm) each.
Additional Luggage
Whether visiting for the day or overnight freight charges apply for additional luggage to that specified above. Each piece of additional luggage up to 17kg is $10.50.
Freight
If your planning on bringing more than just bags, please note the following.
Bicycle – $15.50 (Bicycles must weigh no more than 15kg. Panniers and the like must be removed and checked in as luggage)
E-bikes and bicycles over 15kg – $20.50 (Please note: Tasmania National Parks & Wildlife Service stipulates that e-bikes must be less than 200 watt, or pedal assisted less than 250 watt output and must be fitted with a bell, rear reflector, front facing white light, and rear facing red light. Manufacturer plates with wattage output and cut-off speed specifications must be clearly visible. There are no charging facilities on Maria Island. Batteries must be removed prior to boarding. E-scooters are currently not allowed on island.)
Kayak – $26.00 (All items must be removed from kayaks and checked in as luggage)
Scuba gear – $15.50
Gas bottle – $10.50
Miscellaneous items – e.g. large eskis, chairs, marquees, kitchen sinks – $10.50 each
Pram – free (if traveling with an infant)
Pack Smart Pack Safe
Consider what you bring and how you pack it. Make sure that each item is contained, weatherproof, and weighs no more than 25kg.
Please refrain from ‘piggy-backing’ – tying loose items together (cooking equipment to a backpack, or a sleeping bag to an esky). Items can become loose, get snagged on rigging or boat hardware, and may become a safety hazard.
Please also consider the environment when packing, to reduce the risk of polluting waterways – e.g. no loose plastics or polystyrene boxes.
